Our History
The start
The Kråkøy Norcod processing plant, strategically located in Roan within Åfjord municipality in Trøndelag, is positioned close to our aquaculture facilities. The Sørgård family purchased Kråkøya in 1948, establishing a fish reception facility while also operating fishing vessels.
Over time, they expanded their operations by producing fish products on the island, which were distributed to stores throughout Trøndelag. The processing plant itself was constructed in 1972.
The 80's through the 2020's
In 1986, the Sørgård family ventured into salmon farming, and by 1997 they transitioned exclusively to salmon production, ending their whitefish operations. In 2003, they decided to focus solely on processing salmon and stopped farming altogether. The business grew, collaborating with various farmers, all of whom processed their salmon at Kråkøy.
The team at Kråkøy harvested 55 million salmon, equivalent to 245 000 metric tons, from 1988 until 2023 when it transitioned to a pure cod harvesting facility.
Norcod acquisition
In 2022, Kråkøy conducted a trial cod processing for Norcod, which was highly successful. In June 2023, Norcod acquired the processing plant, making it a wholly owned subsidiary of Norcod. The Sørgård family retained ownership through a stake in Norcod. Following the acquisition, significant investments have been made to optimize cod processing.
Today's capacity
The plant has a capacity to process 12,000 to 14,000 fish per day based on an 8-hour shift. It can freeze up to 20 tons daily and has a cold storage capacity of 200 tons. The facility includes two closed waiting pens and four open waiting pens, with permits to hold up to 600 tons of cod in the pens.
